Marcel Breuer was born on May 21, 1902 in . He spent the twenties in studying and teaching at the Bauhaus. In 1935 he transferred to London and joined the Gropius where after only two years he was requested to join the Harvard Architecture Faculty. There he was in a league with fellow members and students destined to become world famous architects. Later he began his own firm with two branches one in New York and one in Paris where he designed buildings like the Whitney and one for the HUD office in New York. He later died in 1981 after a fighting a long term illness.
The Atlanta-Fulton County Central Library was opened on May 1980. It was designed by Marcel Breuer in association with Hamilton Smith in 1977. Like one of Marcel Breuer's most famous buildings the Whitney Museum it features a sculptural modular design with punched out windows. The Atlanta-Fulton County Central Library is a proud part of Atlanta's Architecture.
